1. What did you do in 2015 that you’d never done before?
Megan: I sent both of my children to school five days per week! (Nevermind that kindergarten ends at 11:20 and makes me want to weep.) I spoke at a conference, visited Oregon, took the kids to DisneyWorld, Universal Orlando, and New York, bought (and then sold) a FitBit, started a Daisy troop, went geocaching, went to one of those painting party places (twice!)
Wendy: Like Megan, I spoke at a blogging conference. Public speaking has always been a huge fear of mine so I’m happy to have checked it off the list. I sort of want to do it again but haven’t been asked back. That might be huge indication of how well it went.
2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Megan: I don’t think I made any last year, but this year I’ll try, try again. I’m giving up soda in January AGAIN in an attempt to get the eating train back on the tracks. I would like to start working out regularly. I want to take the kids to Spring Training, plan a big family vacation, make Long Story Short kick some serious ass, read more books, and revisit the idea of going back to work.
Wendy: I made a few last year that I quickly ditched by February. But for 2016 I am definitely operating with a clearer head and am looking forward to making some huge healthy changes including quitting soda and making more healthy dinners at home. I’m also planning on canceling my gym membership and finding a local yoga studio. Finally, weekly mediation, weekly therapy, and daily walks. Fingers crossed.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Megan: Yes! And I actually got to see and hold said baby!
Wendy: Nope. No one my age is having babies. Come on young people, have more babies so I can hold one! My 20 year old sister should ignore that answer for at least five more years.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
5. What countries did you visit?
Megan: No countries, but we did a fair bit of traveling. We took the kids to Orlando for DisneyWorld and Universal. We took a road trip up the California coast stopping in Santa Barbara, Big Sur, Monterey, San Francisco, Santa Rosa and finally staying with my aunt and uncle at their newly built lake house. Wendy and I took a weekend trip to Temecula for Bloggy Boot Camp. We went to New York City for Thanksgiving week.
Wendy: Turks and Caicos. And, I’ll take Hawaii any day over it.
6. What would you like to have in 2016 that you didn’t have in 2015?
Megan: Better menu planning skillz.
Wendy: Patience. Lots of it.
7. What dates from 2015 will be etched upon your memory, and why?
Megan: Still coming up blank here.
Wendy: There were definitely some high and low lights in terms of our YouTube channel. Things I think we were proud of and choices we aren’t so glad we made.
8. What was your biggest achievement of this year?
Megan: Setting and sticking to a video filming and posting schedule. No one is more surprised than me that we haven’t missed a single planned posting day.
Wendy: It’s a personal one. I have struggled with depression for a better part of two years and had resisted seeing a professional about it. I finally did and feel 100 times better. It’s not a side I share here on this blog or on our YouTube channel but definitely something that I’ve been dealing with for some time and proud for finally taking the steps to help myself.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Megan: Keeping my car clutter-free.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Megan: No, this year was pretty illness-free for our entire family. Which means we’re due, I’m sure.
Wendy: The stomach flu of 2015 was pretty horrible.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Megan: Plane tickets. New makeup.
Wendy: I love, love, love new makeup. And I totally blame Megan for this obsession. I just wish I was better at actually applying it!
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Megan: My mom is always great but was especially great this year.
Wendy: My kid. We have high expectations of her and she always rises to the occasion.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Megan: I’m going to stick with an answer I’ve used in previous years and say internet commenters.
Wendy: My own. Seriously. I need to get out of my own way.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Megan: Travel. But I also spent a ridiculous amount of money on my planner and planner supplies. Libbie & Co, take all of my money now and forever.
Wendy: Target. But I saved 5% with the Red Card!
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Megan: Vacation! Christmas morning. Taste tests.
Wendy: When my favorite Podcasts are updated and Monday mornings in a quiet house.
16. What song will always remind you of 2015?
Megan: Bad Blood, if only because the memory of my five year old singing it will never not be my favorite.
Wendy: Stitches by Shawn Mendes. I loved seeing my daughter dance to him singing it when we saw him live last summer.
17. Compared to this time last year: a) better hair or worse hair? b) more organized or less organized? (This question used to be happy/sad, thin/fat, rich/poor, and I think those are boring so I changed it this year.)
Megan: a) better, simply because it has been cut in recent months, unlike this time last year when I must have been going for some sort of record. b) more! I actually use and reference my planner all the time.
Wendy: a) better, I think. The battle for the perfect blonde continues but I’m liking that it’s long enough again for a baby ponytail. b) LESS ORGANIZED. Marie Kondo take me away.
18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Megan: Walked to school. Put down my phone. Read books.
Wendy: Laugh and listen.
19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Megan: Playing mindlessly on my phone.
Wendy: Facebook. Stupid Facebook.
20. How did you spend Christmas?
Megan: At home with our little family of four, in our pajamas all day. It was glorious and soaked in sweet treats. Would do again.
Wendy: Presents with immediate family, sticky buns, iPad and a big Danish family dinner.
21. What was your favorite TV program?
Megan: Big Brother, Breaking Bad (we just started, it gives me horrible anxiety, and I can’t quit,) Real Housewives (OC,) UnReal, Big Bang Theory.
Wendy: Big Brother, Vanderpump Rules, Fresh Off The Boat, The Goldbergs, Real Housewives (Beverly Hills and Orange County), and The L Word (on Netflix).
21a. (New question!) Tell us about your favorite podcasts.
Megan: Totally Married, Totally Mommy, This American Life, Serial (although season 2 is a total snooze, if you haven’t listened to season 1, it’s still definitely worth going back to,) Nerdist, Heather Dubrow’s World (I KNOW. Don’t judge.)
Wendy: Totally Married, Totally Mommy, Slumber Party with Alie and Georgia (23 episodes was not enough from them this year!), Heather Dubrow’s World, Straight Up with Stassi.
22. What was the best thing you learned?
Megan: A clean car is a happy car. Waking up and getting ready before my kids makes my mornings go much more smoothly. Not leaving dishes in the sink at bedtime or in the morning improves my mental state by one million percent.
Wendy: It’s ok to ask for help.
23. What was the best book you read?
Wendy: Troublemaker. BEST, best, best!
25. What was your greatest food discovery?
Megan: For my birthday brunch I had pancakes layered with pulled pork and topped with an egg. I still dream about it.
Wendy: Damn you, Cosmic Brownies.
26. What did you want and get?
Megan: A trip to Disneyworld, a new iPhone.
27. What did you want and not get?
Megan: A cat. A Spring Training trip. Fame and fortune.
Wendy: To be recognized by someone who watches our channel. And then I’d probably die of embarrassment.
28. What was your favorite film of 2015?
Megan:I had to look at a list of movies that came out this year to even remember that I saw Pitch Perfect in the theater. It was good. I also loved Inside Out, but that’s a sad commentary on the types of movies I see in the theater these days.
Wendy: I don’t really have one for this year. How sad.
29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Megan: I turned 36 this year. My husband took me shopping and went to a painting party with the ladies.
Wendy: GAH! I turned 40 this year and I don’t want to talk about it.
30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Megan: More time.
Wendy: Yep, time.
31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept of 2015?
Megan: Not giving up on skinny jeans, sorry.
Wendy: Old lady. Send help, seriously.
32. What kept you sane?
Megan: Texts with friends, Voxer, an endless stash of Hot Tamales.
Wendy: Thank God for emojis.
33. What political issue stirred you the most?
Megan: Systemic racism. Climate change. Women’s issues. WHERE TO BEGIN.
Wendy: The non-solution to public safety.
34. Who did you miss?
Megan: No one? I think we did a good job of seeing people this year.
Wendy: Avoiding this question here and saving it for therapy.
35. Who was the best new person you met?
Megan: “Met” is the wrong word, but I became friends with Cam & Nicole of Avery and Austin this year and I’m so glad to have them on call via Voxer at all hours.
Wendy: Agree to Cam and Nichole. Great people and I’m thrilled to have them in my life.
36. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2015.
Megan: Let it gooooooo.
Wendy: That it’s OK to put my love, energy and effort into my one child.
37. Show us one of your favorite photos from the year.
