Book thoughts from Megan: This book is not light. It’s not an escape. It’s not the sort of book you read to feel better about the state of the world. But when my friend @erinhanbooks says she’s loves something, it’s likely I will too.

Between Shades of Grey is YA historical fiction about Lithuanian families forced into work camps by the Soviets. It’s a piece of history that is rarely talked about, largely due to the enormous loss of life, and the continued Soviet occupation after the war.

My one wish for this book would be that it had an actual ending. We jump straight into an epilogue where we get pieces of how the story might have ended. And while history rarely does us the favor of wrapping things up with a bow, I still hoped for that in this book.

Nonetheless, I’ve added Out of the Easy to my list - also by Sepetys - set in New Orleans in the 1950s.

We are big fans of finding something to do with your hands to keep your phone out of them. Dip nails have the benefit of taking a good long time to do, while also taking a good long time to destroy.

On our last podcast episode, we talked about our favorites of the year, and I said I couldn’t possibly choose a favorite book, but I would be willing to attempt a top ten. Yes, I like romance novels. Lighthearted romance saved my reading soul in 2020 and I have no regrets. But, we’ve also got spooky, historical fiction, and a double dose of memoirs in the mix.
