Shea McGee is the gal behind Studio McGee’s perfectly curated Instagram feed and Netflix’s new home design show called Dream Home Makeover. Netflix is currently streaming all six episodes of the show which follows Shea, husband Syd McGee and their adorable family as they redesign and style their way through Utah. Yes, I binge-watched all six episodes last Friday and here’s my review of Studio McGee Home Dream Makeover.
Breaking news: Dream Home Makeover Season 3 begins filming March 2021.
Where Did Studio McGee Come From?
I’ve been following Studio McGee on Instagram for a couple of years now. You know when you start following accounts and while they might have a healthy following they still aren’t absurdly popular yet and it feels kind of special like you’ve discovered a hidden gem? That’s how I felt about Studio McGee. I was drawn to her bright, clean interior design aesthetic. It’s everything I want my own home to look and feel like and her Instagram made it feel possible.

In early 2020, Studio McGee partnered with Threshold and Target to bring items like throw pillows, lighting, rugs, storage and wall art to our favorite affordable retailer. I’m not sure if it was the pandemic or popularity, but there was never more than one basket or blanket in my local store.

I’m going to bet the Threshold/Studio McGee line at Target will be almost impossible to locate now that the Netflix show is out.
What is Dream Home Makeover About?
Dream Home Makeover is a hybrid reality TV / interior design show following Shea and Syd McGee and their two sweet daughters. It’s essentially Netflix’s version of former HGTV powerhouse Chip and Joanna Gaines. Remember when everyone wanted to visit Waco to shop and eat at the Magnolia silos? How do you feel about Utah? I’m here for it.
Shea is the designer and Syd runs the business side of things. They have two businesses: the design side and McGee & Co. where they sell higher-priced home decor and furnishings online. They also had a brick and mortar store in Southern California that has since closed but was featured on the show.
The Studio McGee show focuses a lot on balancing family life with a booming business plus the fun stuff of seeing before and afters of home makeovers.

I really enjoyed watching Shea and Syd as a couple passionate about family and work. Their “talking head” interviews were funny and they poked at each other a bit which made them relatable.
Studio McGee Interior Design Looks
The room makeovers on Dream Home Makeover were crisp with pretty layers and textures, new functional spaces that made design sense.
Some of the episodes came with a few challenges but what was missing was the manufactured dramatic formula typically seen on most HGTV renovation and design shows.
Except for the couch that wouldn’t fit in through the doorway.
Will There Be a Dream Home Makeover Season 2?
Yes, a second season of the McGees and Dream Home Makeover has already been filmed. I personally hope the new season drops around the holidays because there’s nothing like cozying up and marathon watching house shows.
Pre-order the already best-selling book Make Life Beautiful by Syd and Shea McGee.
Have you watched the McGees on Dream Home Makeover yet? I definitely recommend this series if you like watching beautiful spaces come together with a side of relatable reality television.
