One of my favorite, easy, delicious, decadent holiday treats is an Oreo truffle. They are everything I said and more – you can put them together in about ten minutes and they’re so dang delicious that you’ll want to give them all away before you eat them all. The fun part is that you can adjust them for the season by changing the flavoring of the Oreo if you’re so inclined. For the holiday season, we’re going with Peppermint Oreo Truffles.
Oreos vs. Joe Joe’s – Which reigns supreme?
The great Oreo vs. Joe Joe debate is one that we’ve had not once, but twice on our channel! We agree that both cookies are good, but I have a longheld belief that Oreos are superior to Joe Joe’s. (Unless we’re talking about chocolate covered Joe Joe’s and then all bets are off because those are amazing!)
The one thing that the JoeJoe held over the Oreo and that was the addition of peppermint bits in the cream filling. Well, Oreo stepped up its game last year and they created a Peppermint Bark Oreo that stands up to the Joe Joe.
ALL of that to say that really, either the Oreo or the Joe Joe will work in these truffles because all you’re doing is smashing them to bits.
Peppermint Oreo Truffle Recipe
32 Peppermint Oreo Cookies (can sub Candy Cane Joe Joe’s
8 oz. Philadelphia Cream Cheese (softened)
2 cups chocolate chips or melting chocolate
1/2 tsp. Peppermint Extract
1 cup crushed candy canes (optional)
Crush the Oreos in a food processor or place them in a Ziploc bag and smash them until they’re crumbly.
Mix Oreo crumbs with softened cream cheese until combined.
Scoop dough and roll into one inch balls
Freeze Oreo balls for ten minutes to help them hold their shape.
While the truffle centers are in the freezer, slowly melt your chocolate. You can use a double boiler or melt in the microwave. If you melt in the microwave, cook in 30-second increments, stirring in between to avoid burning the chocolate. Stir in peppermint extract
Remove the truffle centers from the freezer and dip into melted chocolate. Place the truffles on wax paper to dry. Sprinkle with crushed candy canes (or the topping of your choice) while chocolate is still melty.
Store truffles in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.
Enjoy!
