This blog post has been updated for 2022.
I sent my one and only child off to middle school last year and let’s just say it came with some big changes. I am thrilled to see her spread her wings. As I watch her grow into a teenager, I can’t help but still want to cut her sandwiches into cute heart and butterfly shapes.
She would die of embarrassment these days if I did that. I asked her opinion on lunch box notes for middle school kids – and surprisingly – she was totally OK with it. Consider these middle-school approved!

Why Send Lunch Box Notes?
With so much change and uncertainty this school year, it’s important to encourage our kids through this transition.
My goal for the next couple of years is just to let my daughter know that I see and hear her. Slipping these lunch box notes into her lunches is one of my ways to let her know that I am here for her. I am her biggest fan and cheerleader but she’s at an age where she doesn’t always want to hear it. These lunch box notes for middle school kids are encouraging, positive and motivating during a very vulnerable time of her life.
What if My Child Buys a School Lunch?
You can still send one of these lunch box notes to school even if your child buys a school lunch. My daughter often brings money to school on Fridays to buy pizza but I will slip one of these notes into her agenda or school binder so she can find it during class time.
Our 2020-21 school year is starting at home. I still plan on using this free printable and slipping these words of encouragement into her planner, taping it to her computer monitor or sticking it on her bathroom mirror so she knows how much I love her and support her.
