If you’ve seen our YouTube channel lately, you know we’ve been unboxing a ton of really cool subscription boxes. Today’s was just a cool and we love the idea behind it. Kitchen Traditions is a monthly baking kit subscription box designed for parents to bake with their children.
We were so excited to see this box land on our doorstep. It was huge and filled with so many goodies, including a mixing bowl and cookie cutters from Curious Chef, a disposable apron and chef’s hat, recipe card, coloring pages and stickers, and all the dry ingredients needed to bake and frost sugar cookies.
My daughter has shown little interest in the kitchen. It’s likely because I am not the best role model when it comes to the culinary arts. If I enjoyed it more, maybe she would too. I do love the idea of us baking together, though. Working along side each other, flour on her nose and in my hair, breaking out into dance and singing Taylor Swift songs. But, my skills are lacking and my quest for perfection is usually a recipe for disaster.
I set aside a Friday afternoon for us to make the sugar cookies from the Kitchen Traditions box. My girl was thrilled to dig inside the box to see what was inside (Megan and I had already opened it on camera but my daughter hadn’t seen all the goodies yet).
The cookie dough got away from us somehow and we couldn’t get it to cut into the shapes. I opted for rolling the dough into balls and flattening with my hands. My daughter filled the cookie cutter shapes with dough directly onto the baking sheet. The whole thing was a mess.
I pulled out the baking sheet with a dozen cookies that had baked into one giant one. My daughter didn’t care. She suggested we cut them apart a decorate them regardless. I didn’t have it in me to whip up the powdered sugar icing so we used some pre made frostings I had buried in the cupboard.
In the end, it occurred to me that my daughter didn’t care about singing and dancing or even baking the most perfect cookie ever. She was happy that we did it, together.
Kitchen Traditions delivers monthly baking kits f0r $39.95.
