Like so many of my fellow humans, I started this year with a resolution to lose weight. I wasn’t going for originality with this particular resolution. We’ve reached the point where it’s a necessity. I’m about to get real here and tell you that I’m at my highest non-pregnant weight ever. Something has to change, friends. I joined a weight loss challenge run by a friend of mine and I feel like I’m finally in the right brain space to make this happen.
And that’s the thing, you have to go all in if you want to be successful. Losing weight and making better choices requires some advance planning if you want to be successful, because when a hangry moment hits, you want making the better choice to be just as easy as the choice that involves a paper bag from a drive-thru and a giant soda.
Planning ahead and making lists is one of my favorite things. I once told my husband I think I like the planning and preparing part of a vacation more than the actual vacation itself, so yes I’m a planner at heart. We all know how much I love my paper planner, and I really love finding stickers that suit my daily activities. Just like any other part of my life, this weight loss journey required it’s own stickers.
The stickers aren’t just for looks. I use hydration trackers to remind myself to drink water until I feel like I might float away. Filling in each of those little bubbles is a total celebration moment for me.
One of the components of the weight loss challenge that I’m in is all about making better choices and knowing that it’s these choices that ultimately make better habits. We have a Facebook group where we share our good choices and it’s a place of support and cheerleading and motivation. It’s really easy to think that one little change won’t make a difference, but a week full of Little Wins™ really adds up to something!
In addition to tracking hydration in my planner, I use that space to plan out meals for the week, schedule workouts and make daily to-do lists. I used to only plan out dinner for the week, but now I’m loosely planning breakfast, lunch, and snacks for myself, to stay on track. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I’m keeping snacks in my purse and in my car for those moments when I need to eat right now.
I grabbed a box of ZonePerfect® Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Nutrition Bars and ZonePerfect® Chocolate Peanut Butter Nutrition Bars the last time I was in Wal-Mart and they have saved me on more than one occasion. I always remember to bring snacks for my kids when we leave the house, but I almost never remembered to bring anything for myself. Now I simply keep these with me at all times and no one has to deal with the wrath of an overly hungry mommy. As a bonus, the minimum of 10g of protein makes it a much better choice than the candy bars I’ve been known to throw in my cart at the market.
My second weigh in is today and I’m equal parts nervous and excited. Before I step on that scale I’m reminding myself that success isn’t only found in the movement of the scale. I’m looking back at all of the great choices I made this week, and looking forward to a week that is already shaping up to be a great one full of little wins. Did I mention I haven’t had a soda in two weeks? Where’s my medal?
Grab some ZonePerfect® Nutrition Bars, toss them in your car, and pat yourself on the back for planning ahead. Every little bit counts.
