We love our dogs and we know you do, too. They’re members of our family and we want to make sure they live long, healthy, comfortable lives. In the summer, that requires a little bit more work, but it’s still absolutely worth it! If temps are rising where you live, we can help you keep your dog cool this summer.

Keep Your Dog Safe in the Summer Heat
Summer Car Safety for Dogs
First and foremost, please never leave your dog in the car in the summer. EVEN if the windows are down. EVEN if it’s “not that hot” outside. Temps inside your car can rise rapidly creating a dangerous environment for your dog.
Heatstroke and Dogs
Dogs don’t cool themselves the same way humans do, so your dog won’t get sweaty if they’re overheated. Look for these signs of heatstroke in your dog on especially hot days.
Summer Exercise for Dogs
In the summer, heat + humidity can be a dangerous combination for dogs. Of course our dogs still need exercise so be sure to take walks in early morning or late evenings when the heat has abated a bit. (Read on for ways to keep your dogs entertained in the summer!)
Keep Your Dogs Cool Inside and Outside
I don’t know about you, but I get intensely crabby if I’m overheated. Since my dog can’t talk, I assume he feels the same. Plus, I have a shih tzu, a brachiocephalic (or flat-faced) dog that’s more prone to heat exhaustion.
The number one thing you can do to keep your dog cool is to limit their time outside, even in the shade.
Cooling Places to Rest and Sleep for Dogs
Cooling Elevated Bed – A raised bed for your dog can increase airflow around them as they rest, keeping them cool. Plus, the mesh material doesn’t trap heat inside, making this a great warm weather option. At under $25 and with over 47,000 reviews, this Amazon Basics raised pet bed is a great option.
Cooling Dog Bed – If you want to level up the cooling experience, opt for a bed with a removable insert that you can refrigerate.
Keeping Your Dog Cool from Head to Toe
Cooling Dog Bandana – If you live where it never really cools off during the summer, you’re going to be walking your dog when it’s hot, even after the sun goes down.
Keep them cool with this bandana that you wet, freeze or refrigerate, and then place around your dog’s neck.
Dog Booties – If you ever want to have a good laugh, watch a dog walking around the first time they’re wearing shoes. While your dog might not love the idea of tiny feet prisons, if they have to walk on hot concrete during the day (or even hot sand at the beach,) they’ll thank you for protecting their feet.
Dog Pool – Your dog might like splashing in a pool as much as your do! Get them their own splash pad where they can reach the bottom. Your kids can use this pool too, but don’t put a dog in an inflatable kiddie pool as their claws can easily tear the vinyl.
Car A/C Extension – Keep your dog cool in the car with this extension hose. This hose will allow you to direct air anywhere in your car that might not have access to a vent. Your pup will thank you!
Keeping Your Dog Cool at Night
While keeping your dog cool inside is certainly easier than keeping them cool in the hot sun, not everyone has central air to run all night long. In addition to plenty of fresh drinking water, consider some of the following to keep your pup cool at night.
Crate fan – It’s worth noting that fans don’t cool dogs as well as they do people, but air circulation will definitely help make your dog more comfortable, especially if they sleep in a crate all night.
Cooling Mat for Crates – If your dog sleeps in a crate, keep their sleeping space cool. This mat is self-cooling and doesn’t require electricity or refrigeration to stay cool.
