If you want to be the hit of your neighborhood, consider setting up a hot chocolate block party this winter. This is the absolute easiest block party to start with!
Years ago, a few neighbors and I banded together to host a neighborhood block party for Halloween. We kept it simple, ordering pizzas for everyone and asking everyone to contribute $5. We provided drinks and decorations and the location.
The neighborhood showed up and they were thrilled that we had made this happen! The block party has become an annual staple in our neighborhood and we all look forward to making it happen.
Hosting a Block Party
Since those first Halloween parties we’ve graduated to a variety of neighborhood parties! We’ve had happy hour and outdoor movie nights in the summer. In the winter, once our homes are decorated, we have a simple hot chocolate party.
The idea is simply to provide a way for neighbors to get together beyond a wave as we all drive by. Not only is it fun, but it has made our neighborhood a friendly and welcoming place since we all know each other.
Block Party Invitations
This is arguably the most important part and I’m going to suggest that you go old school with printed invitations on everyone’s door.
Encourage them to text you their RSVP, so you’ll have everyone’s number for future invites.
If you have a neighborhood email or text thread, that works too!

Hot Chocolate Party Decor
I think it’s very easy to go minimal with block party decor. A few themed napkins and a table cover will do it. However, if you want to go all out, we love these hot cocoa decor printables available from Etsy.
Supplies for a Hot Cocoa Party
The best part about a block party is that you can have all of your neighbors pitch in to bring items.
Not only can you source tables and chairs from neighbors, but you can also have them sign up to bring the following supplies:
- cups
- hot cocoa mix
- marshmallows
- candy canes
- whipped cream
- cookies
