It is hard for me to admit that November is upon us and I haven’t really begun holiday shopping. I have lists and ideas and the best of intentions, but other than a few small things here and there, I have not begun to collect items for my family with my usual gusto. This is no way means that my children haven’t begun to make their wishes for the season known, loudly and regularly.
My daughter wants just about every single thing she sees in stores and on television, with the front-runners changing daily. She grabs the Toys “R” Us circular every Sunday to make sure she hasn’t missed anything. Her number one wish list item is a pet, any pet really although top of her list is a cat. I’m sorry to say that we won’t be making this particular wish come true this year, but we have found other ways to appeal to her animal loving heart and we will play those to our advantage. Let’s cross our fingers and hope she’s sufficiently distracted and doesn’t notice that any of these toys aren’t actually alive.
I think it’s safe to say that she would be thrilled with any of the items on this list.
Torch – My Blazin’ Dragon – There was a moment early on the season when it looked like she might be asking Santa for a FurReal Friend that she saw last year that is unfortunately no longer available. Thank goodness she caught sight of Torch who has over 50 sound and motion responses. He comes with a marshmallow that he “roasts” and he breathes flame-colored mist. Not sure which one of us is more excited about this guy on Christmas morning. As an added bonus, Torch is on sale this week at Toys “R” Us for $59.99. Torch needs 4 “C” Batteries, so don’t forget these when you’re preparing for Christmas morning!
Hatchimals – If you can find this toy you might be the hit of Christmas, but currently it’s sold out just about everywhere. Kids interact with the egg in order to get it to hatch and once the surprise animal has hatched, it continues to be interactive as it grows through three different stages: baby, toddler and little kid. It even sings Hatchy Birthday as it moves to each new stage!
Little Live Pets – Someone who knows my girl very well got her these little guys for her birthday and she loves them! These birds chirp and you can record ten seconds of your voice for them to repeat back to you. We are currently in a phase of singing Hamilton lyrics for the birds to chirp back at us and it is endlessly entertaining.
Chubby Puppies – This was my daughter’s number one request from Santa last year thanks to the commercials. I have to admit that the puppies crack me up as they cruise around their little play area and my girl loves them which is, of course, the best part.
Bootsie Pet – Did someone say cat? Sure, this isn’t quite the real thing, but this meowing, purring cat that comes with it’s own treat might just be close enough to count. Make sure to grab four “AA” batteries if you want Bootsie to perform!
Zoomer Hedgies Sprinkles Interactive Hedgehog – I’ve got a bit of a thing for hedgehogs this year and I kind of want to see this little guy rolling around our living room.
LEGO Juniors Mia’s Vet Clinic – This line of LEGO is geared toward builders ages 4-7 and this vet themed set is sure to be a hit!
Mega Bloks American Girl Nick’s Horse Stables – Little builders might also love this stable set, that includes a mini figure of American Girl Nicki.
Willa Wellie Wisher – One of the newer lines from American Girl are these adorable Wellie Wishers. They’re all wearing wellies of course, and we love Willa, the animal lover. We especially love the hedgehogs on her skirt!
Felt Farm Animals – We realize that this list has been heavy on the interactive toys, but we still love good old-fashioned pretend play. This felt Farm Days set is just too cute to pass up.
Jellycat Hedgehog – Who can resist a stuffed animal for the holidays? Of course we picked the hedgehog this year, but Jellycat has a ton of animal options and made the list of Oprah’s Favorite Things this year, so you know it’s good!
Critter Club Books – For your early chapter book reader, we love these Critter Club books. These are great for readers who are ready to move on to longer books, but still enjoy illustrated pages. An added bonus is that there are tons of books in this series, so your reader will have plenty to choose from.
Elephant and Piggie Books – For younger readers, these books from Mo Willems are a big hit, although we’ve yet to find a Mo Willems book that our kids don’t love.
Pet Vet Set
More pretend play! We especially love the scale and the pretend X-Ray included in this set, and I can already see my girl bandaging all of her stuffed animals!
Don’t Forget the Batteries!
In addition to picking the perfect gift and wrapping it in pretty paper, there’s one more element necessary to the success of Christmas morning – the batteries! Fortunately, you can grab batteries along with all of your toy purchases at Toys “R” Us and they’re on sale for the entire month of November. Until November 12, when you buy one pack of batteries, you get the second pack for 40% off, so what are you waiting for?
