Today we’re sharing our favorite fun hobbies for women. We’ve got twenty hobby ideas for those of you looking for meaningful or fulfilling things to do in your spare time. This post has been updated for 2022.
This is a really great article on why you should make room for a hobby in your life. I know from experience that I serve the needs of others before myself and I am left depleted. No time for the things I enjoy doing, the things that make me happy, or things that bring me joy. It’s not healthy to live life this way.

Hobbies At Home
Hobbies at home was certainly the theme during the early days of pandemic lock down. In my home, we tried chalk art, letter writing, crocheting, and gardening. There are so many hobby ideas if you are homebound – either practicing social distancing or if you’re just a homebody. Or, maybe you’re a stay-at-home mom or a working parent looking to find a new passion.
Bread Making
Remember when everyone was making sourdough bread? I even got caught up in the hype and quit after I couldn’t find yeast. Ahh, grocery hoarding. Thank goodness we’re not there anymore.
I was truly fascinated watching everyone on Instagram with their sourdough starters and homemade bagels. Here’s a few links to some highly-rated baking cookbooks and fun accessories to kick off your baking adventure.
- New World Sourdough by Bryan Ford $16.16
- Homemade Sourdough DIY Kit includes everything you need to make six sourdough loaves. $29
Easy Crochet Projects
Megan wrote about learning how to crochet here. We’re certain you can make a granny square, too. Start small to see if this is a hobby for you before jumping into trying to make a blanket. Have some experience crocheting? Definitely check out Repeat Crafter Me for adorable crochet patterns.
Love this affordable set of crochet hooks from Amazon. $14.95
Step-By-Step Painting Classes
If you are a regular follower, you know how much we love painting with Timree Gold. Painting at her studio was our happy place. Timree closed her studio and shifted to an online model so everyone has access to her amazing step-by-step “Timree technique.” You won’t be disappointed with what you create, we promise!
She recently launched Timree Paint Club for $25/month or you can get one class “on-demand” for $19.99. The monthly paint club is a way better deal and if you love painting, it’s definitely worth the subscription.

Adult Coloring Books
I have found coloring to be on the stressful side – especially coloring pages with a lot of tiny detail. Yet, this has all changed since finding adult coloring books inspired by my favorite television shows. Everything from Real Housewives, to Gilmore Girls and the Golden Girls. There are some amazing options available and with the perfect pencils, this hobby can be not only relaxing but enjoyable.

Start a Blog or Create a Niche Instagram Account
Megan and I started our blogs as hobbies. We were moms of toddlers and it was the height of the mommy blog. Luckily, we found a community of creatives and it’s been life changing for us. If you have a story, write it. There is an audience out there for whatever you want to write about.
Instagram is great for sharing photos of your kids. But, have you ever considered using the platform to share photographs and “stories” of something you’re into? For example, create an account for your dog, or pets. Sunsets, historical homes, boats, sand castles, or pretty front doors.
Say you started baking breads and want to expand that hobby into sharing photographs of your baked goods, recipes you’ve tried or tips, and connect with other bakers. Instagram makes it easy to add additional accounts and switch back and forth between your personal account and your hobby account.
Or start by searching #photooftheday prompts on Instagram and join.
Scrapbooking, Photo Albums, Baby Books
I have a teenager and she doesn’t have a baby book. It’s just one of those things that I have put off for so long but it feels like I would be cheating her out of something special if I don’t ever get around to putting one together. Maybe you have been putting it off too! Drag out the box of old photos, or print those photos that have been stored on the hard drive for years.

There is something incredibly special about thumbing through a photo album or scrapbook. I know the idea of scrapbooking sounds dated – though my friend swears scrapbooking is making a huge comeback.
Digital scrapbooking is another great option if the original sounds too messy, too overwhelming or just downright old.
I love these photo albums I found on Amazon ($23-$65). Pretty linen cover (in various colors), acid-free pages, self-adhesive “sticky” pages and it comes in three different sizes.
Jump on the Charcuterie Train
I wish I could make meats and cheese look so appealing. My absolute favorite charcuterie stylist is Meg Quinn from Ain’t Too Proud to Meg and she offers workshops on how to create your own gorgeous charcuterie boards.
Hobbies to Keep Your Brain Active
One of Megan’s new year goals is to play some brain games in hope to keeping her brain active and firing on all cylinders. There are tons of brain activity books available to help keep things sharp.
- People Magazine Celebrity Puzzle
- Supercharge Your Brain with 100+ Brain Exercises
- Brain Games Sticker By Numbers
Sign Up for MasterClass
I’m a huge fan of the online platform MasterClass. I signed up for MasterClass last year when they had their 2-for-1 offer. They are always adding new classes taught by master professionals and every class comes with a PDF workbook. I’ve taken a makeup class taught by Bobbi Brown, gardening by Ron Finley, and dog training with Brandon McMillan.
You can purchase a one-year subscription and take every class that is offered. Want to learn how to cook from a Master Chef? Learn how to write a screen play or a book? Maybe you want to become a better basketball player or about conservation or music production. There are so many great options, see the list of classes here.
Learn a Foreign Language
Want to learn a whole new language? Or how about brushing up on your high school level Spanish. Babble has a limited-time offer of 50% off and lifetime subscription access to all 14 languages they offer.
Start a Book Club
Do you love to read? Start a book club! Ok, so maybe we aren’t yet back to in-home, monthly book club meetings and that’s fine. You can create a monthly book club meeting on Zoom where you get together with your fellow bibliophiles and have some fun. Oh, and remember our Instagram idea above? Start an Instagram book club account. Why let Oprah and Reese be the only book club mavens?
Check out Megan’s complete list of books she’s recommended here on the blog.
Solve True Crime Mysteries
Interested in solving a true crime mystery? Challenge your investigative skills with a monthly subscription membership to Hunt A Killer? Amazon also sells Unsolved Cases which puts yours cold case detective skills to task.
Outside Hobbies for Women
Yes, running, walking and hiking are excellent outdoor hobbies. Looking for something beyond that? Here’s a few suggestions.
“Dance, I said”
So, all you fly mothers…YES, dancing! Unfortunately, in-studio classes are probably on hold for a while until we’re all safe from COVID. But that doesn’t mean you dance at home or in your backyard. Choreographer Ryan Heffington has live Instagram dance classes on Wednesdays and Saturdays. His studio The Sweat Spot also offers live stream classes for a price taught by various teachers.
Play Tennis or Pickleball
A couple of years ago, Megan committed to taking tennis lessons and played weekly. If you ask her, I bet she tells you how much she misses it. Check your city’s website to see if tennis lessons or pickle ball lesson are currently being offered.
Plant a Pollinator Garden
This is my favorite outdoor activity! I absolutely love working in my backyard garden. It can be hard work but also very fulfilling. Last spring, I worked hard on planting a pollinator garden. It didn’t fully thrive and I learned a lot about what I could have done to make it more successful. I can’t wait to get back in the dirt when the weather gets a bit warmer.
I love this pollinator garden starter kit ($23.99) and this honey bee habitat ($17).
Other Hobbies for Women to Consider
Are you still looking for a hobby that is calling to you? We will continue to update this list of hobbies going forward.
Tutor Kids in Need
The school year has been hard on kids. Managing assignments and new learning platforms has left kids falling behind. If you have the patience and a firm understanding of any subject, why not offer up your tutoring services?
Organize, Clean Out and Re-Sale
I might be the only one that thinks organizing and cleaning out closets is satisfying. The real fun is the re-sale. Your trash is another person’s treasure and they’ll pay for it. Sift through your old clothes, books, home decor, kitchen appliances and so on.
Check out our tips for selling your old things.
We would love to hear if you decide to take on any of these suggestions. Leave us a comment our join our Facebook group.
