We’re thrilled to collaborate with Everly on this post.
All opinions are my own based on my personal experience using Everly.
Our daughter has played soccer since she was four years old. When she decided to play at a more competitive level, we hired a private coach for one-on-one training. We knew she would benefit from the individual attention a professional could provide plus help broaden her fundamental skills, motivate and build her self-confidence as a player. Hiring a coach to help with an extracurricular sport was an easy decision because we wanted her to succeed.
However, when she started to struggle with school work earlier this academic year, I was reluctant to hire a tutor to help. Why? Well, for a few reasons. First, I might not know how to play soccer but I know how to multiply and divide and I was sure I could give her the general support she would need for that subject or any other of her studies. The second reason was that I was that kid that had to visit the tutoring center once a week for help with my own homework and it wasn’t a great experience. The pressure to understand the material while I sat there with my peers was extremely stressful and embarrassing. I would pretend I understood just to be done and land back in another session after scoring poorly on my tests.
Signs Your Student Might Need A Tutor
- The homework battle consistently involves tears, takes way longer than it should or just simply isn’t getting done.
- Your child suddenly dislikes school, the teacher or a subject.
- They use phrases like “I can’t,” “I’m terrible…” or “I’m so bad at…” when it comes to their studies.
We definitely took notice when she started to grumble about her nightly assignments. Many parents worry about the amount of homework on any given night but her assignments weren’t in excess. If fact, some nights only required 20 minutes of reading, a few short sentences about what she read and practicing math facts. Forget about the nights that required more than that. We were constantly dancing between trying to motivate her and yelling about just getting it done. Neither way was successful and what we eventually saw was a dip in grades, attitude and a lot of frustration and tears.
Everly On-Demand, In-home, One-on-One Tutoring
Over the holiday break, the opportunity to work with Everly landed in my email and I took it. Everly is an on-demand tutoring app where parents can schedule and pay a tutor to provide in-home, one-on-one tutoring for any subject K-12. They like to refer to themselves as the “Uber of tutoring” and the idea is really simple.
How Everly Works
- Visit http://geteverly.com and answer a few questions about your tutoring needs. The Everly system will recommend the perfect tutor for your child.
- Learn about your selected tutor by viewing their education, experience, reviews and watching their “about me” video.
- Book on-demand by selecting a date, time, location that is convenient for you. Rates are set at $54/hour every time and payment is cashless. Fares are automatically charged to a credit card on file and no need to tip.
As a parent, safety is my biggest concern. Everly’s tutors go through a rigorous background check – beyond industry standard – resourcing multiple layers of criminal checks so that tutors are properly screened and identities verified. This component was so important to me especially when inviting a stranger into my home and to work with my child.
Everly screens and interviews each tutor individually, approving only those who meet their high standards of teaching and confidence building. Tutors are experienced and come from top university programs. Consider that other online tutoring resources allow any individual to join and the burden to vet the tutor falls solely on the parent. Additionally, Everly pays their tutors a premium rate which they believe will translate to more qualified and stable tutors.
While this post is about the on-demand tutoring services Everly provides, I would be remiss not to include how the actual tutoring session went. Miss Marion arrived early and spent several minutes introducing herself and sharing her vast experience as a now retired teacher. She was interested in my concerns for my daughter and was well prepared with materials to assess her needs. While I stayed within earshot as the two worked together on reading comprehension and math, I heard praise, I heard confidence building and I heard her share stories that related to the material. She spoke tenderly to my daughter, gave her clear instructions and was patient with questions. There wasn’t one single tear shed and in my book that is success.
