While we were fighting off millennials for the rights to the coastal grandmother aesthetic, guess who swooped on in and stole this summer vibe for themselves? Gen-F*cking-Z. The teenagers of TikTok decided they now want to dress like what is known as coastal grandmother (and sometimes coastal divorcée). Tell us, does your teen want to dress like a coastal granddaughter?
Blame Nancy Meyers for the Coastal Aesthetic
This article by Olivia Marcus does a great job at summarizing what coastal grandmother chic is all about. TL;DR think gauzy white button down shirt, a linen pant, or a cable knit sweater.
What is a Coastal Granddaughter?
I fell over reading this article on Bustle when they referenced Joey Potter as a coastal granddaughter. If it wasn’t for Netflix streaming Dawson’s Creek, only a Gen-X’er would get this reference.
The vibe is very similar to coastal grandmother but TikTok influencers says granddaughter look is a little more laid back. How much further laid back can you get from a white t-shirt, pants, and a bucket hat? The Bustle article linked above says there are “subtle differences” with “funky floral patterns and pastel color combinations” being key characteristics.
Where to Find Coastal Granddaughter Clothes
Need inspo? TikTok’s “it” granddaughter seems to be Carly VanDyke (that’s her Pinterest and Instagram shown above for those of you withouth TikTok).
Most retailers sell these basics. Linen pants, oversized button down shirts, linen shorts, strappy sandals, bucket hats, woven hats, midi skirts and so on. We’ve linked our favorite pieces from Old Navy and Target below (affiliate links, click any photo to shop).
