Before becoming a stay-at-home parent, I worked a full time gig in the automotive collision repair industry. Yes, a body shop. It was – and still is – my family’s business and I was raised in the body shop spending summers answering phones, helping wash cars, or shuttling customers to and from their homes. When I finished college and needed a job, my dear old dad offered me a position and I gladly accepted.
At first, I tended to tasks I was familiar with. That was all fine and good for a while until I found myself with a desire to learn more in a career I felt had real possibility for personal growth and success. Plus, I noticed a growing resentment in myself towards the attitude of many customers – both men and women – who came in looking for a man to answer their questions. I was young and feisty and felt I needed to break the stereotypes one associates with a trade like automotive repair.
My ambition led me to taking evening classes at a local trade school to learn more about the business. There were a lot of late evenings examining crashed cars and writing mock repair estimates. It was fun and interesting and I felt empowered. I eventually used all this education and experience and took a giant leap to go work for one of the world’s largest automotive manufacturers. Another male-dominated industry!

In honor of Women’s History Month, Brawny is asking everyone to change the perception of what it means to be strong. While The Brawny Man® has stood for strength and resilience for decades, Brawny celebrates the women who have historically exhibited these same traits in the face of gender stereotypes. The Brawny Breaking Barriers video is so inspirational, I dare you not to dive deep into their series of videos featuring true female trailblazers.
